Mainframe Security Specialist

UNIVERSAL Technologies is seeking an experienced Mainframe Security Specialist for a hybrid position in New York, NY to support enterprise-level mainframe security operations. Candidates must reside in the EST zone, active LinkedIn profile preferred. This consultant will play a key role in safeguarding applications and environments by applying deep expertise in CA’s security software (ACF2, Top Secret, RACF) as well as related tools and platforms. The role requires hands-on experience developing and maintaining security rules, managing user access, responding to audits, ensuring compliance with industry standards, and supporting enterprise-level projects in financial and government environments. Strong communication, problem-solving, and adaptability are essential for success in this position.

MANDATORY SKILLS/EXPERIENCE

Note: Candidates who do not have mandatory skills will not be considered.

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant technical field or 10+ years of equivalent professional experience.

  • Extensive experience using ACF2 to develop/create security profiles, establish user-IDs, reset passwords, and manage access.

  • Hands-on experience with Top Secret or RACF.

  • In-depth understanding of information security policies, practices, regulatory and industry compliance requirements.

  • Experience in responding to audit and investigatory requests securely, promptly, and accurately.

  • Experience maintaining SSL certificates.

  • Knowledge of role-based security models and enterprise-wide security administration.

  • Experience with mainframe environments (z/OS, JES2, SMP/E, TSO, IOF, JCL, IOCP/HCD).

  • Experience using monitoring tools such as TMON, Mainview, OMEGAMON.

  • Hands-on development/automation with COBOL, REXX, JCL, PROCS, CTLCARDS.

  • Experience with IMS and DB2 databases.

  • Familiarity with file transfer protocols such as FTPS and Connect:Direct.

  • Experience with Rational Tools (ClearQuest and ClearCase).

  • Knowledge of CA Scheduler, Workload Automation dSeries, or similar tools.

  • Familiarity with PeopleSoft PeopleTools.

  • Strong troubleshooting skills in production environments.

  • Hands-on experience supporting enterprise-wide projects in large-scale financial or government settings.

  • Strong understanding of SDLC methodologies.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

  • Ability to adapt to changing workloads and evolving security requirements.

  • Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities for troubleshooting security and system issues.

SCOPE OF SERVICES

The Security Specialist will:

  • Utilize ACF2 to control access to TSO (ISPF), application data, and system files including JCL and program libraries.

  • Develop and update ACF2 rules based on submitted authorizations.

  • Manage access to sequential datasets, DB2 databases, IMS databases and transactions, LDAP, CA-Scheduler, and system services (e.g., JES2).

  • Modify and maintain groups to manage user additions and removals.

  • Test and validate security product upgrades.

  • Document and update product usage procedures.

  • Perform installation of certificates, end-user re-certifications, password resets, access violation reviews, and user access reporting.

  • Maintain and restore rules libraries backups.

  • Provide ongoing product education and ensure compliance with industry standards.
