User Experience (UX) Designer

UNIVERSAL Technologies is seeking a User Experience (UX) Designer for a hybrid role in Brooklyn, NY requiring 3 days onsite. Active LinkedIn profile preferred. The right candidate will play a pivotal role in enhancing digital access to childcare services for New Yorkers, this role will also lead the design and development of the NYC Child Care Digital Hub—a single, comprehensive online resource for families and providers. The designer will leverage advanced UX research, interaction design, and front-end prototyping to create intuitive, inclusive, and data-driven experiences that improve how families find, evaluate, and access childcare options citywide.

MANDATORY SKILLS/EXPERIENCE

Candidates who do not meet the mandatory skills will not be considered.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Design, UX Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Computer Science, or a related field.

  • Minimum of eight (8) years of proven experience in user experience design with a strong portfolio demonstrating user-friendly, consumer-facing solutions.

  • Strong sense of visual design, typography, layout, and spacing with attention to usability and accessibility standards.

  • Expertise in Figma, including the ability to create complete, end-to-end design solutions independently.

  • Strong understanding of user-centered design processes, including journey mapping, wireframing, and development of low- to high-fidelity mockups and testable prototypes.

  • Ability to synthesize user research and data insights into actionable design hypotheses and recommendations.

  • Proven ability to collaborate with product managers, content strategists, developers, and cross-disciplinary teams to deliver cohesive, user-centered digital solutions.

  • Experience conducting usability testing, analyzing user feedback, and translating research insights into refined designs.

  • Demonstrated ability to adapt and extend existing design systems while maintaining technical feasibility.

  • Familiarity with accessibility standards (WCAG) and inclusive design practices.

  • Strong analytical skills to interpret data and evaluate product performance post-launch.

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to articulate design concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Experience working in or alongside public-sector organizations or government partners preferred.

  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in design practices and collaboration with diverse stakeholders.

SCOPE OF SERVICES

The UX Design Lead will serve as a strategic advocate for user-driven, data-informed digital experiences. Reporting to OTI Digital Service and collaborating with the Mayor’s Innovation Team, the UX Designer will:

  • Lead design initiatives that improve digital access to childcare services for New Yorkers.

  • Develop high-fidelity prototypes, design mockups, and interactive concepts for the Child Care Hub.

  • Conduct prototype testing for new features and develop design recommendations based on user insights.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams—including product managers, UX researchers, content strategists, and developers—to translate user needs into design solutions.

  • Guide content design strategy to ensure clarity, inclusivity, and accessibility.

  • Oversee design refinements leading up to launch and design enhancements for post-launch Version 2.0.

  • Track, analyze, and report on performance metrics to drive continuous design improvement.

  • Ensure alignment with accessibility standards and design system consistency throughout development.
